The Hon. John Muir QC
John retired as a Judge of the Queensland Court of Appeal on 26 December, 2014. He was appointed to the Court in July 2007 after serving as a trial division Judge from April 1997. For the five years prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeal, he was the senior Commercial List Judge.
John was called to the Bar in 1976 and appointed Queens Counsel in 1986. His practice was mainly in company, commercial and mining law. He practised as a Solicitor in London (Lovell White and King, now Hogan Lovells) and in Brisbane (Feez Ruthning, now Allens Linklaters) between 1970 and 1976.
John has served as; Chairman of the Queensland Law Reform Commission; President of the Land Appeal Court; Chairman of the Committee of the Bar Practice Centre and Chairman of the Rules Committee constituted under the Supreme Court of Queensland Act 1991. He was Chairman of the Queensland All Codes Racing Industry Board between 4 June 2015 and 31 March 2016.
He was awarded the Centenary Medal in 2003 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia. Between 2007 and 2014 he was the Secretary of the Judicial Section of Law Asia, and Secretary of the biennial conferences of Chief Justices of Asia and the Pacific.
